Owton Fens Community Association

The aim of this website is to introduce the Owton Fens Community Association's (OFCA) plans to redevelop End of the Road, a former vehicle scrap yard in Hartlepool, North East England, which is currently being transformed into a community recycling/reuse resource and environmentally-focused social enterprise centre of excellence.

The End of the Road project represents the organisation's latest attempt to apply an environmentally focused, multi-agency, joined-up solution to the compound problems commonly associated with life in deprived neighbourhoods.

The Owton Fens Community Association

OFCA was formed at the height of Teesside's economic depression of the 1980s as a grassroots self-help initiative in what remains the second most deprived ward in the 14th most deprived of 354 local authority districts in England (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, 2004). Its aim, then and now, was and is, to attempt to alleviate some of the suffering experienced by individuals, families and communities who found themselves caught up in the wake of a major global economic shift in which, to paraphrase Marx, all that had been solid was seen to melt into ar.

In the 21 years since its inception OFCA has become one of Hartlepool's most recognisable, distinctive and well-regarded facilitators of town-wide community development and neighbourhood renewal programmes whilst retaining its commitment to an ethos of empowering local people to become actively involved in the design and delivery of projects aimed at effectively improving their economic, social and environmental circumstances.
